Store Community: Joseph Legotte at Mesa Rim
1. What is your name and what is your title?
My name is Joseph Legotte and I work with both the Front Desk Team and the Setting Team at Mesa Rim.
2. Coffee, tea, or energy drink?
If I am in Italy, then espresso, anywhere else would be tea.
3. Where can you get the best meal in your town?
San Diego has one of the best culinary scenes of the American metropolises, and of that, one of our greatest claims to fame would be fish tacos, and the best are at Blue Water on India Street near downtown.
4. What is your favorite playtime activity? Do you have a secret spot you’ll share with us?
If not climbing then it would be something in or near the ocean. A day spent body surfing some big waves at any of the world class beaches up and down our coast is hard to beat. It is not exactly a secret, but the stretch of beach from Wind n’ Sea to Marine Street has to be one of the most beautiful and fun to body surf, it being a super violent shore break at times.
5. Where can we find the best cup of coffee in your town?
Again, I am not much of a coffee drinker, but I am itching to try out the Cat Cafe in downtown San Diego. However, it might be the fact I get to play with tons of adoptable cats while drinking coffee that intrigues me more than the quality of the brew.
6. What is the best experience your store or brand has given you?
Every day I am surrounded by people who have done extraordinary things, climbing and otherwise. Bearing witness to the indispensable amount of psyche and motivation accumulated within one company’s reach has been an irreplaceable experience for me, and something I have the pleasure of working around every day.
I climbed pretty above my perceived limit my last time out sport climbing, which was surprising because I have mainly been a boulderer and usually get pumped out by the fifth draw!
8. What are the three website you visit every day?
9. What is your favorite PrAna, Outdoor Research, Evolv, or Saxx product? Why?
I have had the PrAna Zion Stretch pants in red for about six months now, and I have probably never made a better purchase in my life. They trump all men’s climbing pants in terms of comfort, stretch, and look. I have spent countless days climbing, setting, hiking, and cruising the town in them.
10. If you did not work in the outdoor industry, where would you be?
I would probably be back in school getting a PhD in English and writing a thesis on something to do with Harry Potter.
11. What makes your store or brand stand out from the crowd?
One of Mesa Rim’s philosophies that I most strongly identify with is their goal of, “igniting, supporting, and inspiring lifelong climbers.” Having this as the driving force behind all we do means we are deeply invested in supporting and building the community of climbers that either start here, or use us as tool to grow their passion for climbing or yoga. I think this devotion to inspiring and supporting the climbers and yogis in our community sets a proud standard in the climbing industry, and I am lucky be a part of that.
12. Is there a trip that you’ve been planning or dreaming of going on?
If I can swing it I would love to drive up to Alaska this summer. The lure of such a vast expanse of virgin land is nearly unquenchable in my mind.
13. Would you travel around the world by Jeep, bike, or campervan?
Though a camper van would be ideal climbing-wise, I love biking; it would be a much slower and poignant way to discover the mysterious beauty that the world is saturated with. Additionally, the pure physical exertion of something like that appeals greatly to me.
14. A helicopter is coming to take you anywhere in the world, where are you going?
I am going to Patagonia. Though the climbing may be beyond my technical capacity, it would be unreal to just spend time in the region, hiking and learning from the mountains. Also, if at all possible, I would go eat and maybe learn from Francis Mallmann, a superb chef who lives on a small island in Patagonia.
15. What makes you smile?
I smile big when I top my projects, but I smile the biggest any day I get to spend with my girlfriend of four plus years, because it is she that drives me to inspire others and work hard in all that I do.
